COP 16

BRASÍLIA, 09 Dec.
By: João Paulo Monteiro

A group of emerging countries has caught the attention at COP 16 by demanding greater U.S. commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The so-called BASIC, composed of Brazil, South Africa, India and China and India led by Jairam Ramesh said an agreement to make no sense at cross-purposes with climate change without U.S. participation, the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Already China, the biggest emitter shows goodwill through its representative to Xie Zhenhua said that at least wants to reduce its emissions by 45% by the year 2020, well beyond the goal of U.S. involvement that can reach 20%.

Not to look into the backyard serves the U.S., I say this because the country has suffered natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and each year has increased, with heavy snow, floods, however Excuse me I beg to call attention to the glaciers that American has been melting at a pace faster when compared to the Himalayas or New Zealand. Melting glaciers can form huge lakes, which would cause serious flooding such as occurred in the Peruan Andes.

As for the Amazon Fund, designed to reduce deforestation, it serves as a good cala emerging countries, the first to suffer from climatic imbalance caused by us.

According to the Minister Izabela Teixeira, who is in Cancun, the fund is different because the first is the reduction of deforestation and then receive the fund investment, however if the project's main goal is to combat deforestation would not have to invest it in effective way to achieve satisfactory results? And another: what good a background estimated in the billions of dollars if the goal of reducing greenhouse gas study is not met?

The Amazon ecosystem is so dependent on climatic factors such as global climate depends on the preservation of the Amazon, but the way we are - next to nearly 500 ppm CO2equiv, which believe me is not good - we have no weather or even how to save the Amazon .

The fact is that so far, it seems that COP 16 will end as all others. Much money spent, not the U.S. taking action to reverse some of its current staff and finally to the rulers and the climate less important, which will continue the way it is. Wait! What is not, because the trend is the breakdown.
